Murrumur’s debut LP is a drastic stylistic departure from her previous work into explosive, chaotic pop music.

Heavily inspired by occultism, sickness, cultural alienation, and the writer’s own fear of technology, Magic for Beginners offers listeners a manic selection of songs that are equally as blunt as they are cryptic.

In its 10 track runtime, the album pulls from countless musical sources ranging through Electropop, IDM, Emo Rap, Electro-Industrial, Twee Pop, Shoegaze, and even Sludge Metal, which are seamlessly tied together by dizzying drum breaks and Murrumur’s ghostly vocal style. Chaotic is an understatement. Pulling from so many sources, it is Murrumur’s sheer variety of influence and her ability to place them all together that makes Magic for Beginners so fascinating.

Magic for Beginners is like a ghost in the machine, thrashing trying to escape. Its wildly manic and eclectic nature is reflective of Murrumur’s being as a digital pop artist lost from time. Much like a sweet, sickly vampire, its strangely alluring charm is diabolically playful and almost psychedelic at times, but with a sinister smile unafraid to show its fangs.
